Management of Short Bowel Syndrome

  • Igor G. Elyash

Short bowel syndrome is a disorder of proper intestinal function characterized by signs and symptoms of malabsorption. It is caused by multiple factors, including chronic inflammatory bowel disease and previous bowel resections. Initial management is supportive and aimed at restoring nutritional deficits while awaiting intestinal adaptation. If conservative management is unsuccessful, surgical intervention will occasionally restore bowel functionality. In selected patients, intestinal transplantation may be the only option.
