Management of Gallstone Ileus

  • Igor G. Elyash

Gallstone ileus is a disorder characterized by episodes of intermittent bowel obstruction caused by the passage of gallstones into the gastrointestinal tract via fistulization. A thorough investigation, including a computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen, will identify the signs needed for a diagnosis. Management will involve surgical exploration leading to an enterolithotomy to relieve the obstruction. A decision to perform a cholecystectomy at the initial surgery will be based on the patient’s history and clinical status.
