Recurrent Inguinal Hernia
Hernia recurrence is an important complication of inguinal hernia repair. A complete evaluation should include information on prior repair technique and risk factors for recurrence. When the diagnosis is uncertain, imaging including ultrasound and cross-sectional modalities can be especially helpful. It is important to differentiate recurrence from other potential causes of postoperative groin symptoms. Operative approach depends on initial repair approach and technique as well as surgeon experience and expertise. In general, it is advisable to approach the hernia through a non-scarred surgical field whenever possible.
