Duodenal Obstruction in Newborns
Intestinal obstruction in neonates can be due to either complete obstruction (atresia) or incomplete obstruction (stenosis). Annular pancreas is associated with duodenal stenosis and atresia due to the inability of the pancreatic ventral anlage to travel around the duodenum. Duodenal atresia is associated with Down’s syndrome in about 31% and with cardiac anomalies in about 49% of the cases (Burjonrappa et al., Pediatr Surg Int 27:437–442, 2011).
