Abstract

Cushing’s syndrome and disease are conditions of cortisol excess (hypercortisolism). In Cushing’s syndrome, either one or both of the adrenal glands autonomously hypersecrete cortisol. In Cushing’s disease, a pituitary adenoma hypersecretes adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which in turn stimulates both adrenal glands to release excess cortisol. Therefore, Cushing’s disease is also known as ACTH-dependent Cushing’s syndrome. It is also important to recognize the paraneoplastic syndrome of ectopic ACTH production from neuroendocrine tumors such as small-cell lung carcinoma.
