What Is the Utility of ESR and CRP in the Evaluation of Acute IBD Presentations?

Abstract

Use of laboratory testing to predict complications of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an enticing idea. Common targets for risk stratification tools include common markers of inflammation such as white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein. This chapter discusses the role of these markers in risk stratification for decision-making in the acute care setting.
