Sir William Gell in Italy

Chapter
Part of the Queenship and Power book series (QAP)

Abstract

Although Naples was his primary residence, Gell maintained another in Rome on the Palatine Hill from which he conducted investigations of classical sites in the vicinity of the Eternal City that were state of the art for their time. But he was most at home in Naples, with a climate that was congenial to his fragile health and its proximity to ancient Pompeii and Herculaneum. This enabled Gell to produce his best remembered book, Pompeiana, in 1817. He maintained contact with Caroline and occasionally returned briefly to her service in Italy when she needed him. It was during the years between 1814 and 1821 that Caroline wrote the remarkable series of letters to Gell that form Part II of this book.
