Bourn begins the volume with a personal rationale for this publication. Global skills were the focus of a research report he produced in 2008. This was followed by further research on global skills in further education and a publication on the need for global skills in engineering degree courses, The Global Engineer. Globalisation, whilst being referred to in many discussions on skills, has not been the focus of most policy statements and initiatives.

The chapter concludes by stating the importance of all educational initiatives include seeing ‘global skills’ as more than technical skills for the 21st century, including a discussion of the impact of globalisation on communities and what skills people need to respond to these challenges.
