Abstract

In 2023, the Republic of Turkey will celebrate its centennial. Like its predecessor, the Ottoman Empire, republican Turkey has been and remains a perplexing country, not only for its own citizens and others in the region, but also for most of the world. Followers of developments in modern Turkey realize that the country is undergoing a difficult period in its history, as notions of Erdoğan’s Turkey and other “Turkeys” collide. One may be tempted to look at the current context for explanations, while others turn to history to find the root causes of existing problems.
