Migrant Doctors and the ‘Frontiers of Medicine’ in Westernised Healthcare Systems

Abstract

Migrant doctors account for half of all physicians in Australia, a third of those in the UK and a quarter of the US medical workforce. Westernised healthcare systems socialise doctors in a particular way. As a result, medical professionals attach importance to professional hierarchies, aspire to middle-class lifestyles and afford higher status to certain types of clinical interventions. Migrant doctors are therefore disproportionately represented in the frontier zones of Westernised medicine: the geographical and professional spaces that have historically been low status for socio-professional reasons. Engaging with this history of medical migration can serve to stimulate a wider discussion about the roles that migrants have played over time in the global North.
