Measures of incidence are commonly used to compare the occurrence of study outcomes over time, such as in randomized trials and cohort studies. Incidence provides a compact summary of outcomes that occur in a study but lack sufficient detail regarding when the outcomes occurred and may have limited applicability to clinical care.
