The esophagus is foremost a conduit, passing nutrition from the external world into the body. Surgical repair of the esophagus is indicated for a variety of conditions ranging from gastroesophageal reflux disease to cancer. This chapter aims to equip the internist with a generalized understanding of perioperative care when dealing with diseases of the esophagus, which can then be conveyed to any patient that may require treatment.
