A Muslim’s Book and Its Christian and Jewish Readers: The Way al-Farabi’s Enumeration of the Sciences Came to Influence Western European Scholars

Abstract

One of the signal episodes in European intellectual history was the so-called Toledo School of Translators. This chapter explores the social and intellectual context in which this activity occurred. Older scholarship was grounded in “nearly certain” assumptions about the places, participants, and methods utilized in this endeavor. Most of this was wrong. This chapter is grounded in the belief that no person could have begun seeking the Doctrina Arabum and translating its contents without knowledgeable guides, both people and books. The critical role of one important, programmatic sourcebook, al-Farabi’s Book of the Enumeration of the Sciences, is delineated and its influence is traced in the curricula of the early thirteenth- and fourteenth-century universities.
