The Collapse

Abstract

Upon return, the Ayatollah named Mehdi Bazargan as interim prime minister in opposition to the incumbent Bakhtiar and gave a canonical sense to his decision by declaring the obedience to the Islamic movement a religious duty. The collapse at that point had become irreversible; that realization underpinned the conduct of the military leadership. When an insurrection at the main air force base in Tehran broke out on February 9, their options narrowed to plunge into the bloodbath or jointing the people. A forlorn Bakhtiar remained true to his rhetoric of resistance but felt let down by the military leaders whose declaration of neutrality on February 11, 1979, sealed the fate of the regime.
