Abstract

Not until I was a doctoral student and studying learning styles and multiple intelligences did I discover how I learn and realise I am not stupid. As one familiar with the crucial role that play serves throughout our lives, and as a Freirean who knows authentic education is transformative and liberating, I have for years integrated play into my English and ESL courses. In this sketch I describe and evaluate games that I have developed and successfully implemented in my pre-college ESL courses and college English composition courses. In this way students are encountering play prior to their university experiences and in preparation for them.
