Abstract

This chapter provides a definition of socio-emotional intelligence. Based on the intrinsic nature of practising and therefore writing with an embodied relational understanding, the chapter then presents the author’s story and how her life experiences—personal and professional—have helped shape this book. An overview of early years practice is provided in this chapter, briefly presenting the case study which serves as the source of some examples evidencing the need to understand, clarify and develop socio-emotional intelligence within the context of education. The last part of this chapter makes a case for taking socio-emotional intelligence into account within the wider construct of higher education due to the increase in scholars reporting mental health issues, an increase in stress and lack of support for personal development.
