Abstract

Two significant events helped the Kurds in Iraq to place themselves at the center of international public and scholarly attention. Initially, the Gulf War in the early 1990s made Iraqi Kurds strong coalition partners against the Saddam regime. This coalition also caused Kurds to take an official federal status known as the Kurdistan Region represented by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) after the Saddam regime was removed in 2003.
