This chapter explores equity and environmental justice. Despite the fact that sustainability is defined as the “three Es,” equity remains the most underemphasized component of sustainability, particularly within the sustainability plans themselves. The use of the term “equity” is frequently replaced with more generalized discussions of “community” or “society.” These discussions largely lack specificity in populations of concern or in need of special attention. The chapter also explores participatory equity and distributional equity in sustainability planning. We focus on critical issues around equity that includes education, health, housing, and place and community.
