Introduction: Any Resemblance to Real Persons or Actual Facts Is [Not] Purely Coincidental

  • Fabrizio Cilento

The book traces, for the first time, the global history over the last 60 years of “investigative cinema.” The films under consideration reconstruct actual events, mainly political crises and conspiracies. They stylistically blend a documentary approach with fictional and self-reflexive styles typical of Italian post-neorealism, the French New Wave, the New Hollywood, the New Latin American Cinema, and, more recently, transmedia adaptations and network cinema. The project discusses the inadequacy of the label “political” for these works with an analysis of how the tendency anticipated key ideas behind contemporary convergence culture and multimedia storytelling.
