Abstract

The legacy of Paul the Apostle has become the object of intense debate in recent continental philosophy. One of the philosophers within this European philosophical tradition that aims at reformulating his philosophy in the light of Paul’s thought is the Slovenian Marxist Slavoj Žižek. A study about the various ways Žižek reads and interprets the apostle’s epistles reception history is a fruitful tool for contextualizing this kind of reception of Paul, which takes place in discussions where presuppositions about what is historical on one hand and philosophical on the other are operative. While notions of the original historical meaning of Paul’s texts are informing these debates, recent theoretical developments in the discipline of the reception history of the Bible render such notions problematic as arguments against the validity of philosophical readings of the same texts.
