Abstract

Bronchiectasis was first described in 1819 by the French physician Rene Laënnec [1]. William Osler offered a more detailed description in the late nineteenth century [2] and it is suspected that he died from complications of undiagnosed bronchiectasis [3]. Bronchiectasis is a disease characterised by abnormal, permanent dilatation of the small and medium sized airways, leading to symptoms of chronic cough, mucopurulent sputum production, haemoptysis, breathlessness and fatigue [4] (Fig. 14.1).
