Venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes acute pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), is responsible for 250,000 annual hospitalizations in the United States and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Advancing age is the strongest risk factor for VTE prevalence. Acute PE is the most serious clinical presentation of VTE.
