Introduction: ‘Liberty and Union …’

  • Chris Kempshall

In this Prologue and Introduction, Kempshall lays out the focus and scope of his study into relations between British, French, and US soldiers during the First World War. Kempshall explains the importance of events in 1914, 1916, and 1918, and how they came to influence the relationship between the Entente allies, specifically: the Battles of Mons and the Marne in 1914, the Somme in 1916, and the German Spring Offensive in 1918. From this, Kempshall outlines why the allies prospered in 1916 but also why the alliance nearly collapsed at the end of the war.
