Diagnostic Meta-Analysis: Case Study in Endocrinology

The meta-analyses of diagnostic tests play an important role in the field of endocrinology. Decision-making and interpretation of clinical findings should always be based on the best available evidence. Common differences between the guidelines elaborated by different societies as well as differences between the results of particular studies can be a source of confusion for clinician. Also great improvement in imaging technique appearance of new diagnostic methods and modalities (e.g., numerous types of elastography) entail the need for appropriate assessment of the diagnostic value of particular methods. Meta-analysis constitutes important tool allowing for the quantitative synthesis of the results of particular studies.
The current chapter presents two case studies concerning the differential diagnostics of benign and malignant thyroid lesions. The risk of malignancy is assessed to be about 5%, so relatively small, however noticeable. Differentiation between the lesions being at high risk of malignancy needing surgical treatment and benign ones is crucial. Case study 1 compares effectiveness of different types of biopsy in the diagnostics and case study 2 on usefulness of different ultrasound features of malignancy in predicting the type of thyroid lesions.
