An Alternative Approach to the Qur’ān

  • Asma Lamrabet

Adequate understanding of gender equality in Islam requires a holistic approach to the original source. It is not sufficient, as has been the case to date, to stop with the extraction of Qur’ānic verses that deal with women. From within the relational framework pertaining to the holistic vision of the Qur’ān, we should put the particular verses back into their normative frameworks that correspond to a global vision of humanity and understand what the Qur’ān says about women as well as men. To achieve this, three levels of Qur’ānic verses should be distinguished: those of universal scope, which constitute the majority of verses; situational verses, linked to a historical incidence; and specific verses, revealed for women or for men, or for specific women and specific men.
