Abstract

Assisted conception is a highly-regulated area with specific legal requirements depending on jurisdiction. Thorough investigation prior to assisted conception to reveal correctable factors that may reduce the chance of success is key. Patients should be informed of risks and benefits, including accurate live birth rates. Clinicians should ensure that specific consents, including consents to legal parenthood with the use of donor gametes or surrogacy, are provided before treatment begins. All ovarian stimulation carries a risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, hence all patients should be told about this risk; preventative measures are required in high risk cases. Significant pelvic and abdominal pain during assisted conception requires thorough clinical assessment before continuing with treatment. Attention should be given to developing shared protocols between fertility clinics and hospitals where their patients present as emergencies in the event of complications.
