Acne Scars: Subcision

Abstract

Acne affects the face in a majority of cases, with many patients experiencing some degree of scarring, the severity of which correlates to acne grade. Post-acne scars have a significant negative effect on the quality of life of patients.

Subcision is a simple technique, a minimally invasive, safe, and economical office procedure to improve depressed scars of selected patients. The principle of this procedure is to break the fibrotic strands, which tether the scar to the underlying subcutaneous tissue. The technique is best suited for rolling acne scars, with fewer efficacies for ice-pick and boxcar scars.

It can easily be combined with other treatments such as ablative and not ablative laser, microneedle or chemical peels to improve the results.
