Part of the Queenship and Power book series (QAP)

Abstract

This chapter argues that Theophanu and Adelheid were effective and successful regents for the young king Otto III. Drawing on the networks of friends and dependents they had established and trading on the authority vested in Ottonian queens, the regents played an important role in the French succession crisis of 987, stabilized the Slavic frontier, and calmed political tensions in their territories. The empresses’ success can be seen in the peaceful transition of power to Adelheid upon the younger empress’ death, and the peaceful transition to Otto III when he attained his majority.
