The Apollo Mission Control Center is far more than just a site where history was made. It is a symbol of the greatness of the United States of America – an iconic place where people can go and see for themselves where this country actually did what it said it would do by landing men on the Moon and returning them safely to the Earth. This place, now tattered and worn, and sorely in need of costly repairs, is where dedicated teams achieved such extraordinary tasks over several decades that now prompt generations of scientists, engineers, and astronauts to tackle the technological and scientific challenges of today and tomorrow. The fully restored Apollo Mission Control Center will pay tribute to those achievements and inspire future generations to achieve their own greatness. Those of us who worked in this grand facility will be comforted to reflect that we worked in this historic place, a place thought of by some as a “cathedral” of different kinds of spirits; a “can do” spirit, a “team” spirit, a “national” spirit and one with a backup “holy spirit” that was surely always there.
