Quality of Life After MGB Compared to Other Operations

Obesity is one of the most widely encountered problems in both developed and developing countries, and significantly affects physical, social, and psychological states. Moreover, it is usually associated with co-morbid conditions which may be serious. Laparoscopic gastric bypass was proved to be a safe and effective option for the treatment of morbid obesity, and has also been associated with resolution of obesity-related co-morbidities.

Many studies have been designed to observe the impact of gastric bypass on quality of life (QoL) using different questionnaires. Their results were variable, but in general there is agreement that there is significant improvement in QoL after gastric bypass. Laparoscopic MGB is emerging as a safe and effective alternative to the previous gold-standard Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, with equal results plus the advantage of being technically simpler with lower complication rate.

Laparoscopic MGB is a safe and effective procedure which greatly improves the QoL, especially physical, social, and psychological aspects. However, the impacts appear to vary among patients and with the duration after surgery.
