Rhinitis is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Occupational rhinitis is defined as rhinitis due to causes associated with a specific work environment. Occupational rhinitis is often underestimated and underdiagnosed. However, more than 300 substances have been identified as possible agents producing occupational rhinitis. There are two types of occupational rhinitis—irritant and allergic. A thorough history, physical examination, and sometimes specialized diagnostic testing can help distinguish between irritant and allergic occupational rhinitis. It is known that early diagnosis is critical in the prevention of progression into occupational asthma or possibly rhinosinusitis. The prognosis of occupational rhinitis seems to be good if there is significant reduction or avoidance of the offending exposure.
