Umbilical Hernia Repair

Chapter

Abstract

The repair of umbilical hernias will vary upon the presentation of the hernia, the comorbidities noted, and the habitus of the patient. For most patients, the use of a mesh of some type will be preferred as this reduces the rate of recurrence. The surgeon will decide the type of mesh based upon above findings. The insertion and fixation of the mesh can be performed either in an open fashion or laparoscopically. The laparoscopic approach can be traditional or robotic. This chapter describes all of these approaches.
