State-Sponsored Sustainability Within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi

  • Charles A. MatzIII
Chapter

Abstract

Sustainability in Abu Dhabi, defined as the institutional stance toward the long-term planning, operational practices, and policies of managing the Emirate’s finite natural resources in meeting the needs of its citizens without compromise to future generations, is represented through the iconic and controversial project of Masdar City—a multifaceted urban planning project. Masdar, the innovation, research, and investment hub, highlights the paradoxes of a state-sponsored, autocratic governance model, operating within and without Western sustainability standards. The research focuses on the interrelationship of various aspects of policy, against a regional and global backdrop; the publicized stances of various leadership figures and their governmental domains. The geohistorical context correlates environmental, cultural, and economic factors with Abu Dhabi’s membership in the United Arab Emirates.
