When successful academic physicians are asked about the factors that played a significant role in their career, mentorship is uniformly quoted as a key element.
In this chapter, we focus on the role of the mentor and the mentee, stressing the characteristics of the ideal mentor. In addition, considering the complexity of the modern academic world and the changes that have occurred in the work force, we feel that every department of surgery should have a mentorship program and that it should be formal and structured with clear involvement of all the stakeholders – the mentor, the mentee, the department, and the institution.
