The Development of Indicators of Sustainable Mobility Associated with an Urbanism of Proximity. The Case of the City of Faro

Abstract

Sustainable urban mobility contributes to a healthier life for the citizen, to the environmental quality of the urban environment and to social inclusion.

In this context, it is necessary to requalify the pedestrian infrastructures, that encourage walking, and to promote an urbanism of proximity.

The proper location of the public facilities in a city can enhance the use of soft modes and collective transportation, to the detriment of individual motorized modes, leading to greater urban sustainability.

Thus, for the case of the city of Faro, Portugal, we study the accessibility to certain facilities, through the construction of two indicators: the percentage of citizens living in the surrounding facilities/services and the percentage of buildings that exist in these areas.

Indicators developed consider the accessibility to public green spaces, public transport (bus stops and train stations), educational establishments (secondary, primary and middle) and health centres units.

Ideal standard distances, studied internationally, were considered in order to analyse the proximity of the facilities for the dwellings of the residents, we used the functionalities of the geographic information systems, in particular the assessment of distances over the pedestrian network.

The results indicate a trend towards an effective urbanism of proximity that can be boosted in the future location of new services. The developed indicators also provide an important contribution to the municipal management in the definition of structural pedestrian infrastructures in the city, which may be subject to requalification to promote walking.
