The Confucian Concept of Learning

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the Confucian concept of learning, which has been influential for generations in China and other Asian countries. The concept is learner based with a clear emphasis on efforts, thinking, questioning, and practices. Learning is conceptualized as involving both individual participation and collective sharing, and is a continuously deepening process with an ultimate purpose of self-transformation. Teachers are learners as well in such conceptualization, practicing what they are teaching and becoming a part of the learning community. Such a conceptualization helps in re-considering our view of learning and assessments, as well as providing insight into the growing body of students culturally influenced by the Confucian heritage.
