Chapter
Part of the Palgrave Studies in the History of Social Movements book series (PSHSM)

Abstract

This chapter places the book’s focus on youth movements, citizenship and the countryside within existing scholarship and explores some of the significant conceptual issues at play in this research, including the much-debated relationship between the rural sphere and modernity. Following this, it considers meanings of national identity and citizenship across the twentieth century, before introducing and analysing the sources and approach of the book. It concludes with a discussion of the wider significance of this study for our understanding of youth in mid-century England.
