Representations of Resistance: Ironic Iconography in a Southern Mexican Social Movement

This chapter analyzes the highly politicized street art produced by public school teachers in the impoverished southeastern Mexican state of Oaxaca. In posters, graffiti, and three-dimensional imagery and performance, members of the union Local 22 have used biting imagery that inverts state symbols to critique neoliberal policies that they contend jeopardize teachers’ jobs and the future of public education. I contend that visuals and spectacles produced during and since the events of 2006, when the Asamblea Popular de los Pueblos de Oaxaca (Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca, or APPO) social movement emerged following a violent dislodging of the striking Local 22 members, reify the power of public art as a critical form of resistance that contests and challenges the status quo.
