When War and Terrorism Enter the Lives of Young Children

Abstract

War and terrorism enter the lives of young children all too often. Young children can be affected by direct exposure to the violence, displacement, family disruption related to deployment, economic expenditures supporting political violence, media exposure, fear and anxiety related to possible attacks, and distrust and dehumanization of “the other” related to enemy images.

Exposed children can experience negative physical and mental health outcomes and they can develop attitudes and beliefs that make future armed political conflicts likely. Educational professionals and institutions can be important providers of assistance to young children and their families facing armed conflict. The purpose of this chapter is to outline the impacts of war and terrorism on young children and then to explore the ways professionals–especially teachers and education administrators–can help reduce the likelihood that political violence will impact young children.
