Motivational Interviewing for Problem Gambling
Chapter

Abstract
Motivational interviewing (MI) has an extensive evidence base supporting its use in a variety of contexts and disorders. With the problem gambling population, MI has been used as a style of treatment delivery, as a preparation for treatment, as a brief treatment in its own right, as a component of a treatment package to enhance self-help materials and as an intervention for at-risk problem gamblers who are not seeking treatment. MI has had success in all these contexts. Although the mechanisms of change that underpin MI are still not yet understood, it is clear that the manner of therapist delivery is vital.
