Abstract

Even though intramedullary lengthening nails have eliminated external skeletal fixators and their transcutaneous implants for many indications, the percutaneous nature of the nailing procedure, including minimally invasive osteotomy, and locking and blocking screw insertions, continues to place certain neurovascular structures at risk. We have, therefore, included a cross-section atlas modified from the senior author’s 1981 Complications of External Skeletal Fixation: Causes, Prevention and Treatment to help surgeons avoid nerve and vessel injury during limb elongation operations with intramedullary nails.
