Suriname: An Exposed Interior
Chapter
First Online:
Abstract
Examining the Amazon’s often overlooked non-Latin corner, this chapter first describes the economic, social, political, and environmental context of the country of Suriname and its Amazon rainforest interior. It then lays out the country’s environmental legislation and regulations, and the effectiveness of their enforcement, particularly by indigenous and other authorities. In their assessment of this legal and policy structure, the authors examine how rainforest conservation organizations handle the many conflicts, opportunities, and challenges they face.
