Global Patterns in Local and Dark Diversity, Species Pool Size and Community Completeness in Ectomycorrhizal Fungi
Abstract
Recent metastudies and global analyses have greatly improved our understanding about the richness distribution of ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi on a global scale, but the ecological and biogeographic processes underlying these patterns remain poorly understood. Here, we analyse a global data set by adding dimensionality to the EcM fungal richness. We explore dark diversity (set of absent but otherwise suitable taxa for a site), species pool (the total set of suitable taxa) and community completeness (an index showing how much the species pool has realized locally). Our analysis indicates that the dark diversity and species pool concepts can add extra nuances for understanding fungal ecology and biogeography. Here, we show that the increase in EcM fungal local diversity along the host relative abundance gradient is asymptotic relative to EcM fungal species pool size potentially because of increased competition among fungi in favourable habitats.
