A Family Album as Autobiography: Intermedial Readings of Lalla Romano’s Romanzo di figure

Chapter
Part of the Palgrave Studies in Life Writing book series (PSLW)

Abstract

This study analyses the different editions of Lalla Romano’s autobiographical work Romanzo di figure and the fruitful interplay between its visual (photographical) and textual components. The intersection of the two medialities generates an original narrative dimension suspended between word and image and between the historical and the fictional element in the novel. The role of the reader will be problematised, as well as the concepts of “image” and “figure,” with reference to Erich Auerbach’s essay “Figura.”
