Abstract

Discussing landscape in economic terms is often seen as improper. However, landscape fits easily into the categories of economic goods, being a scarce resource for which consumers have a desire. Its usual characterstics as a public good and an externality mean that it is hard to market. Despite people’s aversion to placing a money value on landscape, it is implicitly valued in these terms whenever decisions about it have financial consequences.
