Ground Penetrating Radar and Mapping the Monastery Complex
To understand the role of this building very close to a much larger church, it was necessary to confirm the existence of this older and larger monastery. Some signs can be seen on the ground but most of them are underground. Thus, it was necessary to carry out a survey around the Armenian Church to probe the ground to map the foundations of the monastery complex that existed initially. For this, the use of Ground Penetrating Radar was the most appropriate because it allowed a rapid survey of the area around the Church and did not require any excavation. Due to the shallow nature of the underground evidences, 800 and 500 MHz antennas were used. The results showed a rather complex set of mostly rectangular shapes that seem to connect the Armenian Church to the Carmelite Church and which prolong the original building northwest and southeast of the Armenian Church.
