Abstract

The epilogue looks at the whole of Plotting Motherhood, placing the texts by Augustine, Boccaccio, Petrarch, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Hobbes, Milton, Wilde, and Kushner in relation to each other. Rose explains that the chronological ordering of the book presents an implicit narrative of progress in western representations of motherhood, a narrative hoped for and only partially achieved. An analysis of the contemporary film The Descendants in relation to Angels in America argues that narratives of stasis and narratives of progress in gender relations currently exist simultaneously.
