Preservatives for Topical Ocular Drug Formulations
Chapter

Abstract
Although, the use of eye medications are known for their prolonged presence in the history, the concept of using preservatives in ocular drug formulations came to practice only after second World War. Usage of preservatives restricts the microbial growth in the opened ophthalmic drug formulations which are meant for multiple dosing. Preservatives used for ophthalmic formulations are not free from hurdles. This chapter explains the physical, chemical and biological preservation methods employed in ophthalmic dosage forms and the adverse effect of preservatives on eye.
