Abstract
This chapter summarizes the origin and history of grape growing, beginning in the Caucasus region in prehistoric times, continuing with its westward spread during Greek and Roman times, and finally throughout Europe. It traces the introduction of grapes and vineyards from Europe to North America and some of the reasons for success or failure. Early hybrid cultivars between European Vitis vinifera and North American species and their importance, especially along the Eastern seaboard, are also discussed. The contrast with the history of viticulture in California is highlighted. The further spread of grape growing throughout the USA and Canada is also touched on. Some of the major setbacks to grape growing such as the phylloxera infestation in Europe in the nineteenth century and Prohibition in North America in the early twentieth century are also discussed. A brief survey of the current state of the viticulture industry in the major regions of North America ends the chapter.
