Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third most common cause of death in the U.S. There are numerous forms of disparities in COPD. These range from the obvious disparities in prevalence and outcomes in different racial and ethnic groups to more subtle disparities such as how COPD is perceived by patients and the general public relative to other chronic diseases. In this review, we present the topic of disparities in COPD from a range of perspectives: definition, diagnosis, care, outcomes, policies, and public funding of research. Recent years have shown considerable movement in decreasing many of these disparities, although there remains a need for continued progress on many fronts.
